Fantastic opportunity for a mid-level disputes associate to join a forward facing law firm and undertake high profile work in the thriving energy sector.

About the role

The CMS Infrastructure, Construction and Energy (ICE) Disputes Team has 13 partners and more than 30 associates. The team is instructed on high profile, high value domestic and international matters, which has led to it being ranked in the top tier by Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners and being ranked in the Global Arbitration Review ‘GAR30’ of the world’s busiest international arbitration practices.  In Scotland, CMS is ranked Band 1 in Chambers and Legal 500 for both Oil & Gas and Commercial Litigation.  As trusted advisors to numerous international energy companies, our energy disputes offering is truly global.
As part of that team you will be:
- supporting partners within the ICE Disputes team in providing first class professional service for clients
- working closely with the Oil & Gas, Projects, Energy and Corporate groups within the firm, acting in disputes arising in the oil and gas industry and other construction and energy projects across the UK and internationally
- advising on a wide variety of complex regulatory and contractual issues and disputes
- acting for clients at all levels and entry points in these sectors – including oil company majors, new market entrants, investors, contractors, and all parts of the supply chain

We understand the importance of creating an environment that allows our lawyers to grow and develop within the business.  In addition to providing a diverse range of high quality work, we invest heavily in training our team and pride ourselves on having a collegiate ethos.  We have seen significant growth over the last 2 years and are ambitious to grow further.

About you

This is a great opportunity for an enthusiastic and driven disputes associate to quickly gain experience and take on responsibility.  The role will involve working closely with the team in Aberdeen as well as with our wider Disputes team across the UK and overseas.  We are open to seeing candidates with a background in commercial litigation as well as those with more specialist energy or construction disputes experience.
The ideal candidate will:
- have strong experience in commercial disputes work
- be Scots qualified with good courtroom experience - experience of English court practice and procedure and of other dispute resolution mechanisms such as arbitration, adjudication and mediation would be an advantage but is not essential
- have strong commercial awareness, and ideally an understanding of business in the oil & gas/energy sector in particular
- be skilled in project management and up to speed with law tech and what it can offer
- be hard working, enjoy a challenge and be happy to work as part of the team to meet deadlines
- be organised, proactive and have excellent attention to detail
- have good written and oral communication skills
- be prepared to travel if required
- be willing to attend events and take the initiative in business development
