Excellent opportunity to join an award winning IP and Technology Team at a future facing law firm with a strong national and international presence.

About the role

The IP and Technology team at CMS advises on a broad range of commercial matters across a number of technology sectors. We focus on work of the highest quality and our clients range from large blue chip organisations to smaller commercial entities working with cutting edge technologies.  There is also the opportunity for the successful candidate to get involved in contentious IP issues following the growth of our IP litigation practice in Scotland.
On the IP side you will be advising a wide range of clients on commercial agreements relating to the development, protection and exploitation of IP. We advise a number of leading universities and research institutions across the UK, in addition to working with entrepreneurial businesses on high profile collaborative projects involving IP, complex licensing and technology transfer agreements.  A number of our IP lawyers work closely with clients in the life sciences sector, including advising on pharmaceutical products, medical devices, personalised/ stratified medicine projects and eHealth/ digital health technologies, and you will have the opportunity to develop a specialism in this area if that is of interest. Other clients include innovative companies working in sectors such as food and drink, consumer products, media, energy, and oil & gas.
On the IT and Telecoms side, the work will involve significant projects and high value transactions such as outsourcing, system development and software contracts for blue chip clients. We advise a wide range of clients from those in the financial and public sectors to innovative technology companies who supply solutions to customers around the world. We are actively involved in new and developing areas such as Fintech, blockchain, robotics and artificial intelligence. If you are interested in IT projects, CMS will provide you with exposure to some of the most significant projects in the UK.

On the contentious IP side, we act for a number of Scottish, National and International brands on the full range of contentious IP work, including patents, trade marks, copyright and confidential information.   You will have the opportunity to advise clients on all stages of the contentious work including pre-action advisory work, the raising, running and defending court actions (predominantly in the Court of Session) as well as potentially being involved in managing IP litigation abroad.   Contentious experience is not essential but would be helpful.  However, full training will be provided to the successful candidate should contentious work be of interest.

The team also advises a variety of technology clients who process significant amounts of personal data on compliance with privacy laws, including the upcoming General Data Protection Regulation. We are actively involved in a variety of GDPR compliance projects.
We have a close knit, friendly team comprising 15 lawyers (including 3 partners) based across our two offices in Glasgow and Edinburgh. We work closely with our colleagues in London and internationally so there will be opportunities to get involved in London based projects if that is of interest.
We encourage our team to attend a variety of training, business development and integration events across the UK and also with our European colleagues. Opportunities include attendance at the CMS Academy, CMS World Cup Event or the annual Technology Team conference, all held at a destination in Europe.

You will be responsible for:
* A broad range of commercial, IT, IP, Telecoms and data protection matters
* Drafting and negotiating a broad range of commercial contracts
* Advising on contentious IP matters and managing litigation (under supervision) in the Court of Session and abroad
* Developing close professional relationships with clients and delivering excellent client service
* Providing efficient professional support for partners and senior fee-earners
* Supporting the wider team in developing business and raising profile of the firm
* Involvement in marketing events

About you

* The successful candidate will have c.0-4 PQE.
* You will have excellent analytical and drafting skills, along with a commercial approach and good interpersonal skills.
* Litigation experience is desirable but not essential as full training will be given.
* You will be able to work autonomously on lower value transactions (with support as appropriate), and assist partners and senior fee-earners on more complex, higher value deals and transactions.
* There will be a high degree of client contact, and so experience and confidence in dealing directly with clients is essential.
* Degree/Scots law (or equivalent).
* Strong general commercial expertise is essential with a good working knowledge of IP and IT matters.
